PA NAACP to Receive Thaddeus Stevens Award

The Law Center is pleased to announce that the Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches will be awarded a 2014 Thaddeus Stevens Award at the Law Center’s Celebration of Civil Rights on Tuesday, October 14th.

The award will serve to recognize the exemplary work carried out by the Branches in the fields of civil rights advocacy and litigation. The award will also mark a new milestone in the long and fruitful partnership between the Law Center and the NAACP. Both organizations share a common goal of eliminating discriminatory practices that impede Pennsylvanians’ access to basic civil rights, and in recent years they have frequently worked toward this end in concert.

The Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches recently served as a plaintiff in Applewhite v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a successful challenge to the state’s voter ID law. Additionally, the two organizations jointly filed a lawsuit against the Lebanon School District, a suit that halted the District’s practice of levying excessive truancy fines against Lebanon’s families. The award will serve as a commemoration of the Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches’ work in these and in other cases, and it will honor its continued commitment to the establishment of a Pennsylvania free from the injustices of discrimination.
