Language Access in the School District of Philadelphia

Status Conference Results in Monthly Compliance Meetings and Quarterly Reports

Law Center attorneys and co-counsel from Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP and the Education Law Center attended a status conference in mid-July 2013. At the conference before Judge Yohn, Law Center counsel noted that only 300 or so families of the over 14,000 families in need of language services had actually received translation and interpretation services during the last available data year, 2010-2011.

The parties agreed that since the Law Center and Education Law Center moved to reopen the case, representatives from the school district have been more responsive in providing data and are meeting more regularly with counsel. With the Court’s assistance, it was agreed that the District representatives and Plaintiffs’ counsel will meet monthly to ensure compliance. In addition, the parties will submit a written report to the Court quarterly, with the first report due September 1, 2013.
